Blogger Bandwagon

Well, A few of my friends think that I should enter the world of blogging. So I guess I will jump on the Old Blogger Bandwagon. Now I don't know much about blogging and I am definitely not a writer, however, I will try to do my best. Since I am working full time with the hopes of RVing "someday" about one entry a week will probably be the norm for awhile. Maybe that way it won't be so boring.

From time to time, I may have to reach far back in to the recesses of my pea brain to remember some of the places I have been or things I have done. Today I want to share with you a few things about a place that is near and dear to my heart and a place I have lived for over half my adult life, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Coeur d'Alene is situated in the northern panhandle of Idaho on the northern edge of Lake Coeur d'Alene. It was given its name by the French Fur Traders who found the Indians not easy to deal with when it came to trading. Translated it means "heart of an awl". Lake Coeur d'Alene is 30 miles long and has 109 miles of shoreline. It is fed by the St. Joe, St. Maries and the Coeur d' Alene Rivers. The out flow is the Spokane River. Coeur d'Alene has also been the county seat of Kootenai County since 1906.

Lumber, mining and steamers on the lake have been major industries in the past. Today the major industry centers around tourism. Many recreational opportunities such as birdwatching, hiking Tubbs Hill, biking, jogging, canoeing, kyaking, swimming and boating can be accessed from the downtown area. With a myriad of lakes, mountains, and rivers, all within a few hours drive make it one of the finest fishing, hunting and camping areas in the Northwest.

Each year in December and January the bald eagles return to the east end of Lake Coeur d'Alene at Wolf Lodge Bay to feast on Kokanee salmon as they enter the shallow water to spawn. For many years I have gone to watch the eagles as they soar above the lake looking for their dinner. Here are some of the pictures I took of that end of the lake today.

The Bureau of land Management has been counting bald eagles at Wolf Lodge Bay for 33 years. Their exhibits are very informative . They also have telescopes available to the public. I spotted 10-12 eagles today.

Beauty Bay Road

Beauty Bay Campground is located 3 miles east of Coeur d'Alene off I-90 on State Highway 97. Take exit 22 toward Harrison and St. Maries approximately two and one half miles. Turn left onto Beauty Creek Road and go one mile to campground. The campground has water and pit toilets. Great for hiking, biking and fishing. I have camped here many, many times.
